What Federal ADA Rules Apply to Portable Restrooms at Events?

If your event is open to the public, the Americans with Disabilities Act requires at least 5 percent of your portable toilets to be ADA accessible, with at least one per cluster. If only one unit is provided, it must be accessible.

That rule is simpler than it sounds. Ten standard units mean one accessible unit. Forty units mean at least two, distributed so an accessible option is always nearby. Keeping that ratio in mind early will save you from scrambling at the last minute. Salt Lake City's public event accessibility guidelines reflect these same federal standards.

What Makes a Portable Toilet Actually ADA Compliant?

An ADA-compliant unit is more than just a bigger stall. Key features include ground-level entry with no step up, a 60-by-60-inch interior for wheelchair turning clearance, a wide outward-opening door of about 32 inches clear, grab bars mounted to take real weight, and a toilet seat at roughly 17 to 19 inches high for comfortable transfers from a wheelchair.

Each accessible unit must also display the International Symbol of Accessibility. Signage is easy to overlook but carries real compliance weight.

Placement Rules Event Planners Often Get Wrong

Accessible units must be reachable, not just present. ADA units must be placed on a level area along an accessible route with a firm, stable, and slip-resistant surface. Placing an ADA portable toilet on soft grass, mud, or gravel is a compliance violation.

This is especially relevant at Salt Lake City venues like Liberty Park, Jordan Park, and Pioneer Park, where grass and uneven turf are common. If you are working with soft terrain, stabilized panels or portable flooring are the solution. Plan your accessible route before the event layout is finalized.

Common Placement Mistakes to Avoid

• Positioning units on soft or muddy ground rather than a firm, level surface.
• Blocking the door swing with fencing, vendor tents, or other equipment.
• Providing no clear, accessible path from the main event area to the restroom cluster.
• Grouping all ADA units in one corner rather than distributing them across the site.

Do Private Events in Salt Lake City Need ADA Portable Toilets?

Public events open to the general public are subject to federal ADA requirements. Private gatherings have more flexibility under the law, but providing accessible units is still a smart practice that shows respect for every guest.

If you are hosting a corporate event, private wedding, or ticketed fundraiser, check with your venue coordinator to confirm whether the event is classified as public or private. When in doubt, including at least one ADA unit from us, your reliable portable toilet rental company, is the right call.

How Far in Advance Should You Book ADA Units?

ADA-compliant units are in higher demand than standard portable toilets, especially during Salt Lake City's busy summer festival season. Working with us, an experienced portable toilet rental company, early in your planning process is key for events at popular venues like Gallivan Center, Fairpark grounds, or Liberty Park. Book as early as possible to secure the units you need.

How to Request ADA Units From a Local Supplier

Getting the right setup starts with giving your supplier the right information. When you contact us, your portable toilet rental company, be ready to share your expected attendance, event date and duration, venue surface type, and whether the event is open to the public. That information helps us recommend the correct mix of standard and accessible units.

Once units are delivered, confirm each ADA unit sits on a firm, level surface and that a clear accessible path connects it to the main event area. A quick walkthrough before gates open can catch placement problems before they become complaints.

Plan Your Event Restrooms With Confidence

Accessible restroom planning does not have to be complicated. Understand the 5 percent rule, choose properly spec'd units, place them on firm ground along a clear route, and book early. Those four steps cover the majority of ADA compliance concerns for outdoor events in Salt Lake City, UT.
